One Table, Everyone's Invited

1TABLE is Causeway's annual city-wide Thanksgiving potluck. Every year on the Monday before Thanksgiving, we shut down a block on MLK Boulevard for Chattanoogans to come together and share a meal in the middle of Martin Luther King Boulevard at one long table. Through 1TABLE we are removing barriers and bringing people together from across Chattanooga to get to know each other and build understanding. We believe that to build a city that is an honest reflection of its residents, everyone should be invited to the table. There's no fee, no expectations and no agenda, just an open invitation to get to know your neighbors a little better and to give thanks for this city of ours, together.

In 2014 the Causeway staff was walking to lunch. We had just launched our very first Causeway Challenge asking, "How can we make Chattanooga a more connected city?" So the topic of connection was fresh on our minds. We were discussing the two distinctly different crowds that hung out in Miller Park, and Miller Plaza, two open spaces separated by Martin Luther King Boulevard in downtown Chattanooga. Miller Park was a seemingly forgotten space, known as a hangout for many of the city's homeless residents. Just across the street, Miller Plaza is a polished space, known for lively events and business meetings. We wondered what would happen if we invited both sides, and the broader groups they represent, to share a meal at the same table, right in the middle.

The first year, 700 people showed up. Since then, 1TABLE has continued to grow in numbers, and in heart. This year, 1,500 people joined us, with the vast majority making a clear effort to introduce themselves to someone they would not otherwise have a chance to meet. 100% of the people who took our event survey reported that they met someone new. 1TABLE has been replicated in three cities: Huntsville, Alabama; Milan, Tennessee; and Florence, Alabama.

The table stretched a full city block, parting only for a single tree. An estimated 800 people lined the street at some point: innovators and machine operators, caretakers and creative directors, tiny toddlers and the disabled, the homeless and a lone self-described hobo.

We love collaborating with all kinds of people who are tackling bold projects.

Day in and day out, we are focused on equipping individuals to address community problems. But we know that established nonprofits and for-profit businesses are solving big problems too. We offer consulting services for things like: crowdfunding, community engagement and feedback, reaching new audiences, and building movements around a big idea. Working on something you need a little help with?
