description
Artists are important economic and social catalysts for Chattanooga’s creative culture. They contribute to Chattanooga’s economy in two ways: the production of cultural objects, experiences, and services, and the generation of innovative thought. The cultural objects are physical markers of the creative economy, while innovation helps retain talent as well as attract emerging leaders and industries to the community.

why should people support this cause

background and plan
the plan
MakeWork strives to stimulate our city’s creative economy by empowering artists with the financial support and tools they need to succeed and grow. Since its inception as a CreateHere initiative, MakeWork has provided 85 area artists with $655,000 in grants in the past four years. It is time for MakeWork to raise the funds needed to grow independently and continue to support local talent within a 50-mile radius of the city with Project Grants, Studio Grants, and Career Advancement Grants of up to $15,000 each.
The Lyndhurst Foundation has offered a time-sensitive challenge grant to the MakeWork program. From now until October 31, every dollar donated to MakeWork will be matched by Lyndhurst 2:1, up to $100,000. A $20 gift to MakeWork becomes $60.
Potentially, this could mean up to $300,000 in total for local artists!
MakeWork artists include the chocolate-makers at The Hot Chocolatier, cutting edge graphic designers, portrait artists, performance artists, among others. Within a fifty-mile radius from Chattanooga's center, there is a grantee producing creative work every square mile. Check out MakeWork stats and measurements below.
Career Development:
90% of MakeWork artists have been able to increase the time that they spend on their creative work.
40% of MakeWork artists currently commit 40+ hours a week to their creative work.

63% of MakeWork artists have increased earned revenue the year after their grant cycle.
