Open Chattanooga is full of nerds. Data nerds, artist nerds, student nerds, analysts nerds, software nerds, developer nerds, creative nerds, community nerds. And we need you! OpenChattanooga is an advocacy group working together to make local public data open, available and useful. We use technology as a platform to encourage government transparency, accountability, and accessibility. As public data becomes more accessible online, we encourage citizens to build or replicate tools to make information more useable (example: Chattablocks, Open 311, Mural App, Tree App, etc). A big thanks to developers in other cities that have created these applications on an open source platform. Meaning, the back end of the application is open and ready to replicate, we just need the data in order to do so. Data has the power to enable communities to function more efficiently, but needs to be stored in a publicly accessible, machine readable, and non-proprietary data form. We will continue to encourage the city to release read-able data from the government, non-profits and businesses that could be of use to the public.

Data belongs to you. Data helps us make decisions. Our communities and local businesses rely on data. Once data is in an open format, it allows us to collaborate, participate, and innovate. We need more nerds.

Open data needs a home and the Open Chattanooga Open Data Portal will be that home. We would like to create an online platform for finding, sharing, viewing, editing and opening datasets. The hope is that the data posted on the site would be used by neighborhoods, developers or anyone else interested in the data to build custom applications or otherwise get value from the data.
